Good morning, lovelies!
So I'm pretty excited because I finally participated in Freestyle Friday :) For those who aren't quite sure what I'm talking about, Freestyle Friday is a group on Facebook that is moderated by the wonderful Ashley Robinson. She provides us with a song for the week, we freestyle to it, and share the video with the group on (or around) Friday.
I've been a little leery about my (lack of) freestyling skills so I continuously decided against attempting or posting a video. Well, in the spirit of my "doing a new thing" attitude and how much I love Closer by Kings of Leon, I went for it!! I made one attempt Wednesday but didn't complete it so I tried again on Friday with Meagan and Nicoll.

-SIDE NOTE- I may or may not have golfer's or tennis elbow so I'll probably take it easy this week.... or at least try. In spite of that, I managed to finish my video submission for The Pole Dancer's Monologues. Say a little prayer. I would LOVE to be a part of that cast!!

Doing a New Thing
After competing in Miss Texas Pole Star and seeing all of the tremendous displays of art and creativity, it's safe to say I became a slave to the love of pole. After reading a blog from the Lovely Aerial Amy (you can find it here: http://aerialamy.com/blog/2012/10/25/for-the-love-of-pole/), I was shaken into a bit of a realization: since MTPS, I stopped dancing for the love of pole. I've been comparing myself and my skill set to that of numerous other polers. I've wondered why certain tricks don't work for me and other things of the like and that isn't why we do what we do.
I first heard about pole fitness and pole dancing a couple of years ago. Being that I was still in undergrad, I knew I didn't have time to give it a try but I knew I wanted to. Once time became more available, I was worried about the stigma that came with choosing a workout that stems from exotic dancing.... so I decided against it. In February of 2012, there was a Groupon to try out classes for a month at Zensual. I finally got over my fear of others' perception and I had honestly grown weary of 6am workouts all the time (lifting weights and running is extremely mundane) and I needed something exciting!
Mid-March, I found myself in class with Sarah and several students that seemed pretty well seasoned, as I struggled to attempt a basic climb. At the end of two classes, I was pretty sure I would only stay for the duration of the Groupon, call it quits, and return to the joys of 6am gym sessions. A couple of weeks in, the instructors informed us that Graduation was coming up and welcomed us to perform. I decided to make performing a goal before I threw in the towel on poling since dancing has been my joy for 22 years. Welp.... April 15th came around, I loved performing- and yes, I had finally achieved my basic climb- and I knew that poling was something I couldn't give up on.
Here I am, 7 months later, in love with the art, setting new challenges and goals for myself, and being optimistic in the achievements that are to come. I'm giving myself time to develop as a Polerina and taking everything at a reasonable pace- because honestly, it's much better to pace yourself and practice safely, than to hurt yourself just to attain a new trick or two.
So I'll be posting on here as often as is possible to keep y'all (who care) updated on the pole journey and to offer a little inspiration along the way. I hope this finds you well.
